In Memory of Dr. Fetters

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Mike Fetters, a long-time contributor to family medicine, on July 16 after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Dr. Fetters spent a year as an exchange student at a high school in Shizuoka, Japan during his high school years. He received his Bachelor's degree in Japanese Studies from Ohio State University and completed medical school at the Ohio State University College of Medicine.

He then joined the faculty at the University of Michigan Medical School, he also served as co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research. At the University of Michigan, he founded and directed the Japan Family Health Program and authored over 200 articles on topics including family medicine, medical education, ethics, and research methodology.
He has served as the principal investigator for national and international research projects using mixed methods, and has presented numerous workshops on mixed methods around the world.

Through a grant entitled "Shizuoka - University of Michigan Family Medicine Advanced Training, Education, and Research Program (SMARTER FM)," he prepared and mentored Japanese residents in the concepts, skills, and mission of family medicine.

In addition to these activities, he has also provided many workshops and lectures with Japan Primary Care Association and delivered a special lecture at the Board of Directors meeting in January 2016.
In June of this year, he received the Outstanding Contribution Award of JPCA in honor of his past activities.

フェターズ先生を偲んで

長年にわたって家庭医療学へ貢献されましたマイク・フェターズ先生が、1年にわたる膵臓癌との闘病の末、7月16日に亡くなられたことを、大きな悲しみとともにお知らせいたします。

フェターズ先生は、高校時代に交換学生として静岡県の高校に１年間在籍し、オハイオ州立大学で日本学の学士号を取得し、オハイオ州立大学医学部で医学部を修了されました。

その後、家庭医になられ、ミシガン大学で日本家庭健康プログラムを創設・指揮されました。同時に、精力的に学術活動に取り組まれ、家庭医療学、医学教育、倫理学、研究方法論などに関する論文を200編以上執筆されました。
また、混合研究法を用いた国内外の研究プロジェクトの代表者を務め、世界各地で混合研究法に関して多くのワークショップを開催し、また、Journal of Mixed Methods Research誌の共同編集長も務められました。

日本で家庭医療を根付かせたいという熱意から、30年以上にわたり、日本各地で多くの家庭医・学生との親交をもたれました。
「静岡-ミシガン大学家庭医療教育・研究プログラム（SMARTER FM）」と題した助成金により、日本の研修医・学生に家庭医療の概念、スキル、使命を紹介するため、ミシガン大学における実習・研修の受入れと指導にもご尽力されました。
フェターズ先生との出会いにより影響を受けた日本の医療者が数多くいます。

これまで本学会においても多くのワークショップ、講演会等を行ってくださり、2016年1月には本学会理事会で特別講演を行われました。
フェターズ先生の日本のプライマリ・ケアに対する多大なご貢献に賞賛と敬意を表し、本年6月、本学会より海外特別功労賞を授与いたしました。

フェターズ先生からのご指導に深く感謝するとともに謹んで哀悼の意を表します。
